The Chickens of Liten Hobbit Stuga
At Pop’s Dog Camp, our 5-acre farm is home to a lively flock of rare-breed chickens, who arrived May of 2025. This is our third flock of chickens since we have owned the property; our flock-keeping was paused during COVID, and when we were away from the cabin. After much research, and in alignment with our dedication to rare, heritage, heirloom breeds, these chicks were sourced and chosen for their heritage, resilience, and charm. They’re not just egg-layers - they are the heart of our permaculture farm,
These feathered friends cluck and strut in a predator-proof coop and run in our south meadow, mingling with wildflowers and dodging our five romping pups. While some doggos may be allowed to meet some of the chickens, we keep them safe, enriching our soil and bringing joy.
We’re crafting the “Wiley Lane Landrace,” a unique chicken breed tailored to Astoria’s coastal climate. By selectively breeding Sir Sterling with our Crele Bielefelder, Swedish Flower, Gold Deathlayer, and rare landrace hens, we’re fostering a hardy, diverse flock. A landrace is a locally adapted breed, shaped by natural conditions and careful breeding to enhance traits like resilience, foraging, and egg production while preserving genetic diversity. Our Wiley Lane Landrace will embody Liten Hobbit Stuga’s spirit: colorful, robust, and rooted in the land.
Meet our named flock, learn about our “Wiley Lane Landrace” vision, and find out how you might bring home one of our future chicks or pullets!
Silver Bielefelder Rooster:
Sir Sterling
Characteristics: Sir Sterling is a shimmering silver giant with black barring and a fiery red comb. A German auto-sexing breed, he’s robust, cold-hardy, and supports hens that lay large brown eggs.
Personality: The flock’s kingpin, Sir Sterling crows softly at dawn with a puffed-out chest, sauntering like a silver-screen star. His chivalrous strut keeps the ladies in line, and he’s curious, often trailing our dogs across the meadow.
Crele Bielefelder Hens:
Clara & Clementine
Characteristics: Clara and Clementine rock a wild, tie-dyed pattern of rusty reds and creams, like forest-fairy art. Big-boned and laid-back, they lay 200–230 large brown eggs yearly and forage like pros.
Personality: These gals are social and chill. Clara’s the dreamer, gazing at Upper Meadow wildflowers, while Clementine’s the foodie, first to peck at kitchen scraps. They dust-bathe near the coop, cozying up to our pups.
Swedish Flower Hens:
Freya, Frida, Flora & Fawn
Characteristics: These pint-sized divas are millefleur masterpieces, with speckled feathers in gold, black, and reddish-brown. A Swedish landrace, they lay medium cream-to-tan eggs and thrive in Astoria’s wet climate.
Personality: Feisty and fast, Freya leads, bossing the flock; Frida fluffs her feathers for attention; Flora explores every corner; and Fawn nibbles happily. Their bug-chasing antics entertain our dogs in the meadow.
Gold Deathlayer Hens:
Gretel, Giselle, Goldie & Gertrude
Characteristics: Sleek and golden, these hens shimmer with laced feathers. Named “Totleger” for laying until their final days, they produce up to 250 medium white eggs yearly and are rare gems.
Personality: Gretel poses like a diva; Giselle broods philosophically; Goldie clucks at her own jokes; and Gertrude churns out eggs like clockwork. Their regal air earns respect from our dogs.
Rare and Landrace Assortment:
Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Amethyst, Topaz, Opal, Pearl, Onyx, Jade, Garnet
This year I asked for a well rounded assortment to include extra genetics in the flock. As these birds develop, I will share more details about what they are!
Characteristics: These Greenfire wild cards, from ancient European breeds to quirky landraces, sport unique feathers and lay a rainbow of eggs. Bred for resilience, they’re perfect for our coastal farm.
