Liten Hobbit Stuga

  • Our Farm Ethos

At Liten Hobbit Stuga, our 5-acre farm in Astoria, Oregon, is a living tapestry of permaculture and organic practices, weaving together heirloom crops, rare livestock, and native ecosystems. Inspired by food forests like Ketelbroek, we regenerate the land to preserve biodiversity, foster community, and grow nutrient-rich food. Our ethos is simple: nurture the soil, honor heritage, and share abundance. From our meadow’s wildflowers to our chicken coop’s clucks, every step supports a sustainable future where dogs romp, plants thrive, and neighbors connect.

  • Logging the Hemlocks

To protect our farm and neighbors, we made the tough call to log several hemlocks weakened by disease and storms, posing risks to our cabin and livestock areas. This necessary step, completed with local logger and foresters, prioritized safety while preserving as much woodland as possible.

The logs now fuel our home, provide income for replanting and farm improvements, create nurse logs for our mushroom forest, and help nourish the land with the remaining mulch, transforming loss into growth. We’re replanting with resilient natives to restore the forest’s heart.

  • Trees & Native Shrubs

In place of logged hemlocks, we’re replanting with native trees and shrubs to rebuild our woodland and meadows. In addition to family favorites like apples, pear, fig and cherry, we’re researching slow-growing English Walnut and Red Alder trees to anchor the upper meadow, joined by Oceanspray, Salal, and Nanking Cherry shrubs along the south meadow’s edge.

Pacific Rhododendron and Indian Plum thrive at forest edges, boosting wildlife habitat and soil stability. These additions create a resilient, edible landscape inspired by permaculture principles.

  • Fruits, Veggies & Berries

Our garden beds and meadows burst with heirloom and native bounty. In 2025, we’re sowing NePo Heirloom Rhubarb, Berner Rose Tomatoes, cucumbers, melons, lettuces, peas, and peppers in raised beds, alongside Wild Strawberries and Evergreen Huckleberries. Nanking Cherry shrubs and Pawpaw trees dot the upper meadow, while a Pumpkin Patch nurtures Amish melons and watermelons. These crops, grown with compost and care, feed our family, fuel our seed library, and honor Astoria’s fertile coastal soil.

  • Mushroom Forest

Tucked in the northwest woodland corner, our mushroom forest transforms fallen alder and hemlock logs into a fungal wonderland.

Inoculated with Shiitake, Pink Oyster, Golden Oyster, Chicken of the Woods, Red Reishi, Hemlock Reishi, and Lion’s Mane, these logs yield edible and medicinal harvests. Blewit and Morel beds, layered with hardwood chips and straw, add earthy delights. This shady grove, set up in June 2025, honors the land’s cycles and feeds our table.

  • Sunflower & Pumpkin Patch

Our Pumpkin Patch, nestled in the south meadow, is a vibrant hub of Maximilian Sunflowers and hearty pumpkins, joined by Amish melons and watermelons. Honey bees will be a welcome addition - we are currently seeking apiary partnerships.

This patch glows with golden blooms that feed pollinators and rich fruits that stock our pantry. Sown in June 2025, it’s a low-maintenance, dog-friendly space where pups can romp among sturdy stalks, bringing color and life to our coastal farm.

  • Dye Plants

Our upper middle meadow will bloom with dye plants, weaving color into Liten Hobbit Stuga’s fabric. In 2025, we’re sowing Woad, Coreopsis, Indigo, Wild Bergamot, Lacy Phacelia, and sun-loving natives alongside poppies and sunflowers.

These plants, inspired by our DIY makings, yield vibrant hues for natural dyes, supporting our artisanal crafts. Grown with pollinators in mind, they add texture and purpose to our meadow, blending beauty with sustainability.

  • Wiley Lane Chickens

Our flock of 21 rare-breed chickens brings clucks and charm to the south meadow. Crele Bielefelders, Swedish Flower Hens, Gold Deathlayers, Cream Legbars, and a Silver Bielefelder rooster strut in a predator-proof coop and run, built with cinderblocks and hardware cloth.

These gentle, pet-like hens lay colorful eggs and enrich our soil, embodying our commitment to heritage breeds and regenerative farming.
